Movie Review: The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

While beautifully picturized, this movie is about an hour too long. During the Q&A screenwriter Eric Roth defended the length saying, there are some stories that require a longer running time to be told, and this was one of those, but I disagree, afterall it began as a short story by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Were this an novel, I would have understood, however I feel this was more an inability of the writer to edit himself most likely feeling clever with himself over little conciets like fate and chance (he did mention Amelie though I don't believe he collaborated on it). The middle part of the movie, the development of the relationship between Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett meanders, likewise the sideplot of Tilda Swinton also could have been tighter. However, as I mentioned, this movie was simply breathtaking. It truly does evoke the phrase 'moving picture'. The use of color and camera angles show a true attention to detail which is surprising considering the brutal length of the movie, and for the most part the entire movie is able to maintain the same sense of artistry. This movie has a good chance to bagging the Oscar for art direction and cinematography, or at least garnering a nomination in those catagories. It will get nominations for writing, direction, special effects, and possibly leading actress as well. I don't know that I'd give Brad a nomination for best actor, however he is rather good...better than I expected. I am sort of in love with Cate Blanchett, but she is simply stunning in this movie (she appears to have lost some weight). Also, I don't know if it was a body double, but she is an excellent dancer and extremly graceful. Also the Tilda Swinton cameo is delightful--I love how aloof she is (leaving him with a simple, polite note slid under the door). Worth seeing, but as I said, brutally long. Might be better waiting until it comes out on DVD, but make sure to get the widescreen edition.
